Being prepared for an emergency is one of the best ways to ensure the safety of your family in case of a
natural disaster or other situation. It's a good idea to sit down with
all members of your household to make a plan of what to do if an
emergency situation comes up.
Your emergency kit should contain items that you'll need in case you lose power, have an injury or need to evacuate. It's best to begin with good quality containers in which to store your items to protect them from damage and moisture and that can be easily moved when needed.
Prepare a First Aid Emergency Kit in its own container that has bandages, anti-septic spray or ointment, pain relief medication, rubbing alcohol
pads and other basics you may need. You should also prepare an Emergency Food Kit
that contains non-perishable food items along with a pot to heat water, a few basic utensils and enough water to last each person in the home for 3 days. A specific storage place should be planned so everything
stays organized and within reach. Be sure to include flashlights and
extra batteries in a watertight container.
It's also helpful to prepare a smaller Emergency Kit
for your vehicle in case something happens when you're away from your
home and you can't get back there quickly. These kits should contain the
same preparedness items just on a smaller scale. In addition, you will need jumper cables, a tow rope, along with a few tools, gloves, a way to keep warm and a light to guide you. Make sure to have a phone charger with a power source to keep it going. Just not having a phone working is a calamity for most of us.
